Fender Springhill SB35

Fender Musical Instruments Inc. decided that it was time to make a significant mark in the acoustic guitar market by designing a "World Class" acoustic line of guitars. The recent overwhelming successes of several acoustic builders for example Taylor, Larrivee, and Breedlove, to name a few, prompted fender to make a decision to build all solid wood acoustic guitars in the USA to compete for this growing market. Check out the specs on this Pre Owned Fender.

Fender contracted the Apprentice Shop in Spring Hill, Tennessee to help develop and build a new line of acoustic guitars that would be comparable in quality, construction, playability, and most importantly tone, to the best all solid wood instruments on the market in 1994. The Apprentice Shop, under direction of Mike Lennon, was world renown for expert repair, er-finishing, and restoration of vintage instruments. The shop was strategically located just outside of Nashville Tennessee where a decade of growth in music recording and production could help launch this new line.

A grand total of 440 guitars were hand built during 1994 through early 1996 by a small group of master luthiers. Fender purchased Guild Acoustic Guitars in late 1995 and discontinued the Spring Hill Series. The purchase of Guild, a well known, well respected, line of acoustic guitars eliminated the need for Fender to break into the high end acoustic market under the Fender name. Most of the master craftsman building the Spring Hill Series guitars went on to form the Guild Custom Shop sometime later in 1996.

The SB-35 is a rounder smaller jumbo shape which was developed by William "Bill" Schultz, CEO of Fender, and Bruce Bolen, Director of Artist Relations for Fender thus the "SB" for Schultz/Bolen series. It features highly figured Maple for the back and sides. The Maple used was some of the best figured and acoustically rich wood available in the world at the time. These particular instruments were deemed "historically significant", by the builders, due to the uniqueness and rarity of the wood.
